Stone table was commissioned with the brief to create a a table to commune. Our research into materials began with two ideas: first, a table that could display an artifact within the thickness of its top, and secondly, an impossibly thin top with a concealed structural system. We developed these two schemes in parallel. The two schemes gradually became defined by their use of two opposing plastic substrates: resin and concrete.

The two materials was interesting to us because they carried such contradictory qualities and yet both could be cast into the same formworks.

The final design used a lattice structure of steel to reduce the thickness of the table’s top . Coupled with a low-density concrete, the form appeared massive and yet was maneuverable. A series of hidden welded connections between the top and the legs allowed us to remove diagonal bracing that otherwise would have caused the form to rack from side to side.
