James Veloria is a vintage clothing store in Chinatown, previously housed on the second floor of a mall beneath the Manhattan Bridge. For its new home, we looked to the history of the department store to build a world fit for the dreamlike one James Veloria seeks to create.

The department store thrived on steadiness and predictability. Fixed prices and economies of scale, moving large volumes of goods to lower their cost, let it operate much like shipping or transit. New materials, iron and plate glass, made a new kind of space possible: compartmentalized into departments, vast enough to collapse landscape and room into a single interior dreamscape. The store became a world unto itself, with its own inner logics, rules, police, and culture, its own ways of understanding and displaying space.

Within it, showing and seeing became products in themselves. Spectacle was projected inward, keeping people in the store, and outward, describing how they should live and arrange their own homes. Just browsing became a way of existing in public, and through it, private interests crept into, and came to dominate, the public realm.

Yet the same capacity can be turned. The interior enfilade and its theatrics produce a collective public imaginary, carried out into the city. The pavilion and the field in which it is viewed become micro-stages for life to be demonstrated and played out, much as Archizoom, at MoMA's Italy: The New Domestic Landscape in 1972, imagined architecture as a stage for the private drama of life. The department store is an armature, a model for how life can be. As such, it can be subversive and radical, a space where new utopias are envisioned and actualized.

James Veloria is divided into three zones, each marked by a collaboration: Drake Carr, Confetti Systems, and Andrea Smith. Here the clothes, in their reimagined life, take on this role, acting out a shared vibrancy, dynamism, and collective celebration that permeates out into the city.
