The Demilune Cabinet is a storage piece for a home in Brooklyn. It begins with a cabinet from the client's childhood, shaped as a half moon. The demilune is an uncommon, historic form, and we were drawn to recasting it as something modern.

The cabinet takes the place of a defunct fireplace. Where the fireplace in the adjoining living room recedes into the wall, the cabinet swells out from it: a convex form answering a concave one, the hearth turned inside out.

Its surface is an array of aluminum tubes. For a client who is also a pianist, the piece sits somewhere between furniture, tool, and instrument. The tubes read as pipes or keys, and they posed a demanding fabrication problem: holding a single precise curve across many discrete parts.

Rather than a framed carcass with doors hung on it, the piece is made of two massive curved doors. The doors are the cabinet. The curve of the front invites a hand, and opened wide, the half moon splits in two and opens to the room. It is not passive cabinetry but a presence that performs, played as much as used.
